Hydropower, Digitalisation, and Renewable Energy in Europe

The Di-Hydro Podcast Series explores how digital technologies are transforming hydropower, one of the world’s oldest and most reliable sources of renewable energy.

Through conversations with researchers, engineers, and partners, the Di-Hydro Podcast Series takes listeners from hydropower’s historical roots to its digital future, unpacking concepts such as sensors, Artificial Intelligence, and Digital Twins in a clear and accessible way.

Each episode offers insights from the Di-Hydro research, and invites listeners to discover how century-old technology and innovation come together to shape the future of sustainable energy.

Episode 0 | Discovering Hot Water – Hydropower in History

Before massive dams and high-tech turbines, hydropower was already shaping human history.

In this opening episode of the Di-Hydro Podcast Series, we travel back in time to explore how moving water became one of humanity’s first sources of energy — from ancient water wheels in Greece and China, through medieval mills, to the birth of modern hydroelectric power in the late 19th century.

Along the way, we uncover surprising milestones, including inventions that are still in use today, and reflect on why hydropower has always been a story of innovation and adaptation.

Episode 1 | Digital Era in Hydropower – the Di-Hydro project

After exploring the long history of hydropower in Episode 0, we now turn to the present (and the digital future) of this renewable energy source.

In Episode 1 of the Di-Hydro Podcast, we introduce the Di-Hydro project and its mission to modernise hydropower plants through digitalisation. Joined by Dr. Alkiviadis Tromaras (CERTH), Project Coordinator of Di-Hydro, we discuss how tools such as sensors, Artificial Intelligence, and Digital Twins can support hydropower plants become smarter, more efficient, and more resilient to climate and environmental challenges.

This episode breaks down complex concepts and shows how digital technologies are already being tested in hydropower plants across Greece, Italy, and Serbia.
